I am aware of the need for pregnant individuals to have a choice about maintaining an unexpected pregnancy. However, I believe that sometimes abortion is presented as the only choice because the alternatives are very costly and unknown. Many individuals, who have had abortions, are sad and depressed as they go through their lives thinking about the baby who is no longer a person to the world, but remains embedded in their own minds. Perhaps we can make more options for a decision that not only affects the mother, the father and certainly the baby, but also affects society as a whole. What if we made other choices available to the mother such as a safe place to live, education, nutritional food, prenatal and postnatal medical care, and counseling about adoption, jobs, childcare, and survival as a parent? What if this mother had real options? Many would not choose abortion. There are many childless couples who would love to adopt a child or fathers and relatives who would take custody and raise this child. Please check out a program that I have compiled using and organizing existing government and community options to develop a safety net for these mothers, Safe Havens. We would save money in the process and make a difference in the world.
